First Playthrough Tips (Avoid Spoilers)
First Playthrough Tips help new Undertale players finish a first ending without drowning in spoilers. This guide stays light on late-story reveals.
Play blind on purpose
Undertale is designed so your choices matter. On a first run, do not open ending guides, boss weak-point lists, or “best route” videos. Talk to NPCs twice, try ACT before FIGHT, and treat death as practice — SAVE points exist so you can learn patterns.
You do not need to kill
Every encounter can end without a kill. FIGHT lowers HP; MERCY and ACT change how the fight resolves. If you want the friendliest long-term path later, keep EXP/LV at zero. If you accidentally kill someone, finish the run anyway — Neutral endings are still part of the story.
Expect a Neutral ending first
The full peaceful ending is not available until you have seen a Neutral ending at least once. That is normal. Finish Asgore / the post-Asgore sequence, watch the credits, then come back with a checklist if you want True Pacifist.
Suggested first-run goals
- Explore each area thoroughly before rushing bosses.
- Buy healing food before major fights.
- Spare Toriel, Papyrus, and Undyne if you can — it keeps more story doors open.
- After Undyne collapses in Hotland, use the water cooler nearby.
What to skip for now
Ignore Genocide kill quotas, “soulless” endings, and credit-dodging secrets until you have finished at least one full playthrough. Spoilers there permanently change how later peaceful endings feel.
