Combat Basics
Combat basics for Undertale’s turn-based bullet-hell battles. You control a red SOUL (sometimes other colors) and choose FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, or MERCY between enemy attack turns.
The four commands
- FIGHT — deal damage with a timing bar. Reduces HP; defeating monsters yields EXP and gold.
- ACT — character-specific options (Talk, Compliment, Pose, etc.). Many peaceful solutions require the right ACTs in the right order.
- ITEM — use inventory: heal, or trigger odd item interactions.
- MERCY — Spare when the name turns yellow, Flee when available, or other mercy options the fight provides.
SOUL colors (examples)
- Red — free movement in the bullet box.
- Blue — gravity; jump over bones and grounded patterns.
- Green — shield facing; block spears instead of dodging freely.
- Yellow — shoot; used in certain show fights.
- Purple / other — line or constrained movement in specific battles.
Practical tips
- Watch the enemy’s flavor text — it often hints the correct ACT.
- Dying is information. Patterns that feel unfair on try one become readable on try three.
- Spare does not always appear immediately; lower their will to fight with ACTs first.
- Flee is valid. Gold loss beats a wiped inventory of rare food.
