Neutral Route Explained
Neutral Route is Undertale’s default ending family: you reach the surface story beat without meeting every True Pacifist flag, and without completing a full Genocide clear.
When you are on Neutral
If you finish the game without the full friendship + True Lab package, or if you gained EXP, you are in Neutral territory. Neutral is not a “failed” run — it is the intended first ending for most players and unlocks later peaceful content.
Why endings feel different
After the credits, a phone call summarizes who survived and how the Underground reacts. Killing or sparing key bosses (Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, Mettaton, and others) changes that epilogue. Two Neutral runs can feel like different stories even though both are “Neutral.”
Flowey and reloads
After Neutral, Flowey may comment on your run. If you spared him and kept zero EXP, you can reload and backfill missing friendship steps for True Pacifist. If you gained EXP, plan a fresh zero-kill run after you have seen Neutral once.
Recommended reading order
- Finish any Neutral ending once.
- Read the True Pacifist checklist.
- Only then look at Genocide — it permanently stains later Pacifist endings.
